San Francisco, CA

Visitors to San Francisco are never far from one of the many attractions that has put this coastal city on the map. One of the distinctive local attractions is the Haight area of the city. Once synonymous with hippies and the counter-culture, today the corner of Haight and Ashbury Street is a confluence of modern, trendy shops and piercing salons and alternative bookstores. San Francisco is well known for its support of alternative lifestyles, as is evidenced with the annual Bay to Breakers Run, which routinely sees families and frat boys pounding the pavement next to nudists and artists. Film enthusiasts flock to the San Francisco International Film Festival, which occurs in April and features over 200 acclaimed films from around the world.

population
San Francisco grew rapidly throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, increasing in population from 57,000 in 1860 to 417,000 in 1910. Although the population leveled off during the 1930s, rapid growth resumed in the following decade, fed by the huge demand for labor by war industries during World War II. By 1950 the population had reached 775,000. After 1950 the city's population slowly declined as the surrounding suburbs grew.

In 2000 the population of San Francisco was 776,733. In 2004, the city?s population was estimated at 744,230.

weather
San Francisco has an atmosphere of genteel chic mixed with offbeat innovation and a self-effacing quality so blatantly missing from brassy New York and plastic LA. Its hilly streets provide some gorgeous glimpses of the sparkling bay and its famous bridges. An average of 52 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) in January rises steadily through to a peak of approximately 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) in July. Summers are usually warm and pleasant with plenty of sunshine and virtually no rain at all from the beginning of June through to the end of September. The weather is probably at its most inviting in spring and autumn, with a surprisingly pleasing October temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius). From November through to spring, San Francisco's rainfall can be frequent and often heavy.

Employer
In addition to the computer industry, which despite the downturn still boasts the largest number of jobs in the area, other active industries in San Francisco include retail, health, insurance, manufacturing, and real estate. The likes of Dolby, The Gap and Sega are headquartered in San Fran, while quite a few biochemical companies and university laboratories dot the Bay Area, offering a range of jobs to those trained in the hard sciences. And let's not forget the service industry, supported by the constant influx of tourists from all over the world.

cost of living
If your heart is set on living in San Francisco, you can expect to pay out the nose for a nice flat. A nice studio apartment in San Francisco will cost about $1100 - $2000 a month, while one-bedroom apartments will start around $1800. As dire as it may seem, it is an improvement from a year ago, when the waiting lists for such apartments were impossibly long and renters had little choice but to join in almost cut-throat techniques...
The cost of livign if the city is estimated to be 171.4.
